This new girl is feeling like a new woman.

Life has changed for Zooey Deschanel since she welcomed daughter Elsie Otter in July — so much so that the 36-year-old actress feels like she has (finally!) officially entered into adulthood.

“I’ve never really felt like an adult,” the new mom says in Redbook magazine’s May issue. “But I think it’s a huge accomplishment to have a child so maybe I feel like an adult for that reason!”

Zooey Deschanel‘s daughter Elsie Otter isn’t quite talking yet, but sounds are definitely happening.

The actress tells Ellen DeGeneres on Thursday that the 7-month-old “makes a lot of little, like, pterodactyl kind of noises.”

“Like ‘ahh, ooh, ahh.’ And a noise that sounds like choking,” Deschanel says of Elsie. “She’ll be like ‘ah, ah, ah.’ And I’ll be like, ‘What’s wrong?’ and she’ll be like, ‘Ha, ha, ha!’ ”

Despite the troubling vocalizations, the New Girl star can’t help but add, “she’s freakin’ cute!”

It took a few months, but Zooey Deschanel has finally spilled the beans on her baby girl’s name.

The New Girl star and her husband, Jacob Pechenik, have chosen Elsie Otter for their now 3-month-old daughter, the couple told PEOPLE Wednesday at the Rock the Kasbah premiere in New York City.

“It’s Elsie…” Deschanel began, while Pechenik finished, “Otter.” “Like the animal,” the actress explained, with her husband adding, “Sea otter!”

The actress elaborated on Today Tuesday morning, saying, “We just really liked the name Elsie and then we both love otters — they’re very sweet and they’re also smart. They use tools … they hold hands while they sleep, there’s so many amazing things about otters. They’re wonderful animals.”

Born in late July in Austin, Texas, Elsie is the first child for the pair, who announced both their marriage and their daughter’s birth in August.

Move over Kanye West, there’s a new surprise entrant into the presidential race — Zooey Deschanel‘s infant daughter.

The New Girl star, who welcomed her daughter with new husband Jacob Pechenik in late July, joked on Friday about the little tot’s political aspirations on Twitter.

“My infant daughter is going to run for president,” Deschanel, 35, wrote. “She remains silent all of the key issues but she’s much cuter than Donald Trump.”

Back in July, New Girl star Zooey Deschanel gave birth to her first child, a daughter, a month after quietly marrying husband Jacob Pechenik. Though the public has yet to see the baby, Deschanel’s costar Lamorne Morris reveals that she is one adorable kid.

“She’s an extremely cute baby,” Morris, 32, told PEOPLE at the Television Academy’s Dynamic & Diverse Emmy cocktail party at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills on Thursday. “She looks like Zooey.”

“Two good-looking parents will make a good-looking kid. Unless there’s that one where you’re like, ‘Oh, you’re going to make a terrible child,’ ” he jokes. “But that was not gonna happen with these two.'”
