Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent‘s daughter Poppy loves to be in the water — and is choosing her swim outfits already.

“She’ll pick the bathing suits she likes to wear,” said Brent while hosting the Janie and Jack 2016 Summer Collection launch in Los Angeles on Saturday, where his 14-month-old daughter was enjoying wading in the kiddie pools.

“She picks the flamingo every time! I don’t know why, but she does.”

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent have unveiled their biggest labor of love to date.

In the October issue of Architectural Digest, the couple share the nursery they designed for their 5-month-old daughter, Poppy, in the family’s new apartment in New York City. Even cuter: Poppy joined her proud dads for the cover shoot, showing the world just how much she’s grown since making her debut in PEOPLE in May.

“We knew we wanted to have a family and that we wanted to raise our child in New York,” Berkus, 43, tells the magazine. Adds Brent, “The day we closed on the apartment, we were walking through Washington Square, and I told Nate, ‘We have to treasure this.’ For two kids from Minnesota and California to be living in this apartment on lower Fifth? It’s insane. I always wanted to live beautifully, and the idea of Nate and Poppy and me creating a life here together…”

Less than a year after tying the knot in New York City, designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are taking on their most passionate project to date: fatherhood.

“I’ve always wanted to be a parent,” Berkus, 43, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I had hoped that I would have this chance, but I didn’t want to do it on my own.”

“Until recently, we didn’t think it was possible,” says Brent, 30. “But we’re fortunate to be legally married and things just fell into place. We’re really thankful.”

On March 23, the couple welcomed daughter Poppy Brent-Berkus. Surrounded by the surrogate’s family and their own, “everybody was hand in hand” for the birth, recalls Brent.

“Surrogacy can be about science, it can be about money, or it can be about intention,” adds Berkus. “We were really lucky to have everybody that was involved in allowing us to have our daughter be excited for us.”
