Lucy Liu Celebrates Son Rockwell’s First Birthday: ‘This Has Been the Most Incredible Year’

Many happy returns to the littlest Liu!

On Saturday, Lucy Liu wished her son Rockwell Lloyd a happy first birthday with a sweet photo and message on Instagram.

“Happy 1st birthday to my little love Rockwell!” she wrote next to a snap of her son at the Bronx Zoo, wearing a birthday hat and taking in a monkey exhibit.

“This has been the most incredible year of new adventures and endless fun,” the Elementary actress, 47, added. “Giant thanks for everyone’s generosity.”

Liu also shared a clip of herself helping her son blow out the candles on a huge birthday cake, on what looked to be the set of her show.

The proud mama welcomed her son via a gestational surrogate in 2015, and told PEOPLE in May that motherhood is something she enjoys greatly — and realizes is going by quickly.

“I didn’t realize how quickly babies progress,” she said. “Very basic things that you just take for granted. They’re just this little lump of flesh, and then all the sudden they’re turning around, they’re observing you and they’re smiling and they’re interacting. It’s a magical experience.”

People who set out to be single parents intentionally bewilder me. It’s selfish, really. “I want a baby so bad that I’ll take some man’s sperm and some woman can be the surrogate and then I’ll play with it when it comes out.” Meh, enjoy your entertainment, I guess.

@ick, Plus it’s kind of narcissistic lol. Didn’t just want a baby to mother, wanted a baby with HER genes (but didn’t care to give the kid a chance to have a father in their life).

“ick”, could you be anymore judgemental? You have no idea what journey leads someone to become a single parent through gestational surrogate. As for it being selfish, how is it more selfish than ANYONE wanting to have children naturally? What makes it any different? There are a million reasons to have children, by whatever means. Why judge someone’s choices when you can’t possibly know what lead to them? It does nothing more than make a commentary on YOU rather than them.

What a cute little guy! I met Ms. Liu by chance in
London a few years ago. She was very sweet, and such a tiny little thing. I wish her and her adorable little boy a lifetime of happiness.

@ick@lol people who feel the need to comment negatively on things that don’t concern them at all really bewilder me. I am sure she did not come to this decision lightly, the desire to have a child with your genes is one that is based on evolution. so youre basically faulting her for being a member of every species ever.

@ick, @lol: You are incredibly judgmental and narrow-minded. However people choose to become a parent, whether it’s alone or with a partner or significant other, is their business. It’s all about defining family in your own way and giving unconditional love to a child–no matter how they came into this world.

Everyone here is slamming her for having a child on her own. So she wanted a baby. It has not been reported that she’s been in a relationship that would lead to two-person parenting. What was she supposed to do? Just get randomly knocked up by whomever she may have been in a relationship with to provide her with an extra parent? Then have that person leave or “amicably co-parent” as everyone else in this country seems to do? That doesn’t seem very beneficial to the child as well. Plus, the same people slamming her for single parenthood would be slamming her for that. News flash: not all people (in fact the vast majority) find forever love to start a family. I think if she is a happy parent and has the financial resources to take care of her child, that’s going to have a much better effect on her child than unhappy two-parent exes co-parenting.

@Martinez. Yes, makes perfect sense that they are covering their eyes to conceal the fact that they are Asian (which is not a surprise to anyone, btw). Or maybe they are covering their eyes because they are standing outside on a sunny day.

@Martinez – I don’t understand your comment. I’m Chinese and not once have I ever heard about why covering one’s eyes would make sense if the person is Chinese. My Chinese family and friends are proud to be Chinese – we take pride in our cultural heritage and work hard to be supportive family members and contributing members of our communities. We’re not perfect but there’s certainly no reason to hide the fact that we are Chinese!
