For Thandie Newton, breast is best — at least when it comes to feeding her own son.

On Saturday, the British mom of three shared a selfie on Instagram showing her breastfeeding her 2-year-old son Booker Jombe at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk, England.

“Perfect happiness,” the award-winning Crash actress, 43, wrote alongside the photo. “This is what my body is made for.

“And the rest is my choice,” she finished, tacking on the hashtag, “#Freedom.”

Aside from the serene nursing photo, Newton also shared a separate glimpse into the twosome’s environmentally friendly transport to the music festival.

“Off to @latitudefest with my Booker,” she wrote next to a photo of herself on a bicycle, with her toddler strapped safely into a seat affixed to the back.

Perfect happiness @latitudefest This is what my body is made for. And the rest is my choice. #Freedom

Aside from Booker, the ER alum is also mom to daughters Nico, 11, and Ripley, 15, with director and producer husband Ol Parker. She is a big supporter of more natural forms of parenting and gave birth to all three of her children at home.

“I’d never been in hospital as a child or as an adult really, and I just associated hospital with being ill,” she said in 2014 after Booker’s birth. “And I felt beautiful and healthy and wonderful when I was pregnant, and being at home was the place I felt most relaxed and comfortable.”

ugh, 2 is too old.

Two-year-olds have a full set of teeth, doesn’t it hurt when he bites? I did not breast feed my children, also my choice! Geesh, can’t we just be kind and enjoy our choices?!?

Do any of these people think we want to see something that is so personal and should be kept private not broadcast for everyone to see. UGHHH

I’m still nursing my one-year old and actually find this inspiring. Beautiful photo!

Good for her. People need to get over that women breastfeed. It’s stupid this is even worth posting about

The child isn’t safely strapped in to that seat! People will probably jump all over me but it makes me cringe when people don’t take the time to appropriately secure their children in any vehicle/mode of transportation. Aside from the fact that he should be wearing a helmet. As for breastfeeding, totally the choice of Mom and baby. Bottle or breast, FED is best. That’s all that matters.

this is a bittersweet article for me. I wish I could have breastfed my son but he didn’t want to have anything to do with it. I feel like a failure and when I see women doing it for so long it makes me feel like less of a woman. I wish they would keep that in mind…although I can see the other side; they are getting so much flack for breastfeeding; I am sure that hurts then as well. Why don’t we just keep it private?

No it does not hurt when they have teeth because they suck out milk not chew your nipple. It’s a lovely bonding experience. Most people probably post these pics to try and normalize it so they can do it in peace. I’m tired of these stories, not because I hate seeing a breast feeding mom but because I hate seeing the alleged disgust people say they have over breastfeeding when breasts are all over the place. All over TV, magazines, billboards, and almost every teen that swears she looks cute in her push up bra.

Many people can look at many kids and think “he/she is too old for diapers, too old for pacifier, too old for this and that. But guess what? You’re not the one taking care of that kid, so stop being judgemental.

That kid is too old to be sucking! Yuck!

Iwish- You feeling less like a woman is YOUR issue to sort out, not hers or anyone else’s.

Don’t understand the need for the “exposure” (no pun intended). You nurse. Goody for you. A two year old nursing in this day and age isn’t unusual. Although, it is more for the mom than the child at this point. It seems more like the moms can’t seem to let their babies grow up. There many ways to bond other than nursing.

Is that Bill Murray on his shirt? lol

He’s 2 he’s eating table food now I’m pretty sure he can get off the tit now I saw this woman just whip its out at the library on front of the kids like really it’s so natural so is peeing doesn’t mean I want my kids to see it is it really that hard to at least put a blanket over

Why would someone post that photo? So strange!

I respect her choice to breastfeed as I hope she and others would respect my decision to bottle feed…

I am all for breastfeeding and I don’t have issue with people who breastfeed in public. After all, a baby has to eat… what I don’t get is why these celeb post pictures of it on their social media with hashtags like they’re doing some amazing thing that no one has ever done before. Believe it or not, breastfeeding is more accepted than the media wants to let on. Yes, we see the stories where women are asked to cover up or they are shamed for it when in public, but what we don’t see are the MILLIONS of women who BF every single day without issue. The rate of BF’ing acceptance is far higher than some would have you think. Posting a picture of yourself on social media like they’re some kind of martyr almost makes me want to roll my eyes. You are not furthering a cause. You are not creating a stepping stone for other mother’s. You’re not doing anything that millions of other moms (who choose to do so) aren’t already doing. I think *this* is where the resistance comes from. When women act like they’re doing something so new and innovative, and posting on social media begging for validation, is where they start to run into the naysayers.

iwish,
people who nurse, should be able to discuss it openly and freely without judgement without thinking they are hurting those who can’t their feelings. There are many things some can do and others can’t. Example, some can have babies and others can’t, some have to have a csection, some people can’t walk, run or play sports. So, should people not discuss having a baby or discuss vaginal birth? Should we cancel the broadcasting of sports so those who can’t play aren’t upset? Please stop feeling sorry for yourself. We all have things we can’t do, as not everyone can do everything.

“Geesh, can’t we just be kind and enjoy our choices?!?” Oh the irony, when you started off with a tone that mocks her choice. She never says anything against not breastfeeding, her comments are specifically about HER body and her choice. She doesn’t imply anything about anyone else’s choice.

Doctors disagree that “two is too old.” And it’s a beautiful photo, regardless of my own choices in feeding.

Her husband is very good looking! She is so pretty.

This is beautiful

Breastfeeding, home birth, biking– I love what those choices say about her priorities. Also, Americans actually don’t get to arbitrarily decide when is too old to breastfeed.

Claire on

To the person who says Dodgers say 2 is too old, NO. they say at least 6 month and preferably until 12 months and then as long as the child allows.
Breastfeeding is best. This nonsense about how everything is equal and formula is just as good…nope. Breast is best.
If she wants to nurse into his 2nd and 3rd year (did he just turn 2?) that’s her choice. I had a 33lb 12 month old so I understand how houst8ng a big baby can be tiring but it was lovely. I weaned him by 14 months. If she wants a few more maths then good for her. 3, 4 or 5 years old? I think that’s a little different.
We need to promote the benefits and we need to stop using the sight of women’s bodies just for sex. That’s why everyone gets creeped out. We’ll see countless waifish 18 year olds in Victoria’s Secret but a woman feeding a baby? SCANDALOUS.
AAP:
“This recommendation is supported by the health outcomes of exclusively breastfed infants and infants who never or only partially breastfed. Breastfeeding provides a protective effect against respiratory illnesses, ear infections, gastrointestinal diseases, and allergies including asthma, eczema and atopic dermatitis. The rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is reduced by over a third in breastfed babies, and there is a 15 percent to 30 percent reduction in adolescent and adult obesity in breastfed vs. non-breastfed infants. Approximately 75 percent of newborn infants initiate breastfeeding.”
