Jeremiah Brent Says His Job as a Parent Is to Keep Daughter Poppy Safe and ‘Let Her Be Who She Is’
Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent‘s daughter Poppy loves to be in the water — and is choosing her swim outfits already.
“She’ll pick the bathing suits she likes to wear,” said Brent while hosting the Janie and Jack 2016 Summer Collection launch in Los Angeles on Saturday, where his 14-month-old daughter was enjoying wading in the kiddie pools.
“She picks the flamingo every time! I don’t know why, but she does.”

As parents, the designing duo — who were married in New York City in May 2014 — always wanted to encourage their daughter to be confident and trust herself.
“We talked before she was born,” Brent says. “Our job as parents is to really keep the environment safe and let her be who she is.”

And they have certainly done that. “She’s really strong. She’s independent, super adventurous, she’s jumping off of things and trying to get into the pool constantly,” Brent continues. “I take her in the pool every day and she’s starting lessons next week.”

Apart from her swimming sessions, Poppy is starting to find her voice.
“She’s talking a lot! She says ‘pool,’ [and] ‘baby.’ She tells us when she doesn’t want to do something, she’s very expressive,” shares Brent, who is getting used to his daughter saying no “to everything. She’s like, ‘No, not having it.’ ”

Even still, the proud dads wouldn’t have it any other way. Poppy is the focus of their lives, and they couldn’t be more fulfilled.
“It’s always about her, especially now,” says Brent. “I never thought that I would be a parent and have kids. It is the layer to my life that I never knew I would need.
“You are around honesty and vulnerability every day — it’s so good.”
