Nicole “Coco” Austin gave birth to her first child, Chanel Nicole, in November, and has been looking amazingly fit in recent photos she has posted (and no, she didn’t use a surrogate).

So what’s her secret to looking so great only a few months after becoming a new mom? The answer is actually a lot simpler than most might think.

“I’m breastfeeding,” the reality star, 37, says on PEOPLE’s Mom Talk. “And I’ve noticed that breastfeeding in general burns so [many] more calories.”

Austin — who also opened up about how difficult and painful breastfeeding can be — adds that she didn’t really want to hit the gym in the first couple of months after Chanel was born. She wanted to spend as much time with her daughter as possible, so diet was key.

“Since the gym was nonexistent for me, I ate really, really [healthy],” says the former fitness model, who has been married to Chanel’s father, Ice-T, 58, since 2002.

“I have to be honest: I felt the pressure,” PEOPLE editor Janine Rubenstein confesses. “I do a lot of celebrity interviews, and you see these amazing women snap back, and I was like, ‘I want to be like that body-after-baby spread we just did in the magazine!’ ”

“They say it takes 10 months to put it on and another 10 to really get back,” says ESPN anchor Hannah Storm, 53, who has three daughters.

Continues Rubenstein, “I gained 40 lbs. [while pregnant with son Reece, now 14 months], and breastfeeding really did help.”

They are so cute together!!!! My favorite celebrity mom and daughter pair! She has bonded so well with her daughter.

Say what you will about Coco, but she seems like a genuinely loving person. I think she is a prime example of not judging a book by its cover. Yes, her outfits and body are ridiculous, but like I stated earlier, she seems like a good person. Also, the baby is gorgeous and happy!

Her daughter is like a little doll! Dimples just like her daddy! Perfect blend of her parents!

Not a fan of Coco, but it’s true, breastfeeding helps a lot. That’s the way the nature planned it.

Breastfeeding does help, but so does the fact that she didn’t gain an excessive amount to begin with and it is her first baby. With my first I actually gained too much and still lost it within 6 weeks while breastfeeding. Not so easy with #4 and I gained the recommended 30lbs and yes breastfed. I lost it but hitting the gym wasn’t optional that time 😉

“Most moms already do it”….way to be condescending to the non-breastfeeding mothers People. I actually sincerely doubt “most” moms do it. And as someone who nursed one baby and had to formula feed the other, the weight actually came off much faster when I didn’t nurse.

Everybody knows breastfeeding burns calories, come on! This is not news. Can we get off the weight loss obsession for a min. and just say how darling the baby is.

The little girl looks like her dad ! Sweet pic of the mum and her adorable baby ! Weight is not so important as long as baby and mummy are totally healthy….

She does look good (except for the big fake butt), and her daughter is a cutie. But I have to say, it was alot easier losing the weight with the first baby than the second, so it doesn’t surprise me the way she looks, especially since the birth was in November.

Not all moms lose weight breastfeeding, it just kept me fat because it made me crave carbs all the time. I lost the weight after I stopped nursing.

@Mily – THANK HEAVENS SOMEONE FINALLY SAYS THIS TOO (and yes, I had to use caps). I felt so frustrated and alone that this happened to me with both of my boys. I nursed my first for 3 months and the second for 5 months, and each time I couldn’t lose weight until I stopped nursing. I swear my body just held on to the fat. I just had to not worry about it and focus on the fact that I wanted to give my boys as much breastmilk as I could. I had to work right after having both of my boys, so nursing for a prolonged period was tough. Also we found out that our first was actually allergic to my milk, and did much better on formula. I know that breastfeeding is considered the end all be all for both mom and baby, but in all honesty I am not really a true believer of that. I saw both of my boys thrive on good formula, and I was much less stressed out and able to feel more like myself. Just saying.

The mothers who couldn’t breast feed are far too sensitive if someone who did breastfeed makes almost ANY kind of comment about it. Relax. No one is judging you. It’s okay.

After having my baby, the last thing I worried about was losing weight. All I wanted to do was enjoy being a mom. If you maintain a healthy weight before you get pregnant and don’t gain an excessive amount during your pregnancy, you will be fine. I don’t know why so many women are obsessed over being skinny instead of enjoying their baby.

I think a lot of women care about their physique and there is nothing wrong with that. It doesn’t make them care less about their baby, or make them less of a mom. I think it depends on personality. Some women care about their physique more, and some less. There is no right or wrong here. Also, a happy mommy is probably a better mommy. If you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin, that helps every day and in every aspect of what you do. There are so many pressures on moms today. Women can’t help but feel the pressure to do everything and look great doing it. I support all mama’s – we have a hard job and we should boost each other up and support one another.

Why are they spared the comments other people get? Specifically, why isn’t anyone questioning how white Chanel is? The conspiracy theories about about other babies’ parents and how they “should” look (Blue Ivy’s newborn hair plus the doubting that Beyoncé ever gave birth to her in the first place). This adorable little girl is as Caucasian as anyone has ever been. How come?

Peggy on

She has her dad’s dimples. cute.

So…..since most moms already do it……….not a secret, right? Come on with the click bait title!
