Is Janet Jackson about to learn the real meaning of “No Sleep?”

Multiple outlets claim the singer, who turns 50 on May 16, is pregnant with her first child. Entertainment Tonight was first to report the news, while a source told E! News that Jackson is reportedly in her second trimester of pregnancy after successfully working with a fertility specialist.

“Family members say she is pregnant,” a source close to the family tells PEOPLE.

Jackson previously sparked speculation she is expecting when she postponed her Unbreakable World Tour so she and her husband, Qatari businessman Wissam Al Mana, 41, could focus on “planning our family,” she said in a video posted to Twitter in early April.

“We’re in the second leg of the tour, and there actually has been a sudden change,” Jackson said in the clip.

“I thought it was important that you be the first to know. My husband and I are planning our family. So I’m going to have to delay the tour.”

Jackson, whose new single “Dammn Baby” was released earlier this week, continued, “Please, if you can try and understand it’s important that I do this now. I have to rest up, doctor’s orders. I have not forgotten about you. I will continue the tour as soon as I possibly can.”

The notoriously private couple wed in a secret ceremony in 2012. A rep for Jackson did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.

First child at 50?? I know you’re in good shape, but still. Why not get a surrogate?

heather on

Ummm everyone talked about this weeks ago. Late to the party People. Maybe you’re too busy writing Kardashian articles?!

Sick and selfish.

if true, this will turn out to be the 6th longest pregnancy…..first five belong to Kourtney and Kim Kardashian. uggh!

Congratulations to her if it’s true. Babies are a blessing.

Congrats!

Wow..that’s just crazy. I’m only 42 and couldn’t imagine having a baby at my age. I hope she has the energy for it..especially because she’ll be almost 70 when her child graduates high school…and that’s assuming she lives that long.

Carla on

Wow she is old enough to be a grandma

Kathy on

50 is time for grandchildren, not first babies. She knew she was either trying or was already with child. Why schedule a tour in the first place?

[email protected] on

How ridiculous to wait until almost 50. Why not adopt? A lot of black and mixed race babies need homes

Omg! This is funny! Watched out late Michael Jackson your sister is pregnant at age of 49 before 50! Ha Ha! lol!!! Wishing her the best at the age before a baby! It time for a tubal ligation JANET JACKSON! YOU MADE YOUR LATE BROTHER LAUGH IN HEAVEN! Good luck on your pregnancy!!!!! Your too old to have a baby!!!! 😀

Dee on

This is not her first child… Janet had child with first husband James DeBarge! But congratulations!!!!!!

Blind Gossip Knows the Truth on

She’s not pregnant. She’ll have a baby within the year but she’s not carrying it. I don’t get the need for the facade. There is no shame in surrogacy. A happy, healthy home for baby is what matters.

KD on

We are all subject to the aging process, and a pregnancy at 50 is going to take a big physical toll. I think the argument about how old she is when the kid is in college is irrelevant. Should could see 90+, and her kid would be 40. None of us are guaranteed anything in this life, especially our health. There are people that have their babies on the younger side, and pass away too soon because of terrible diseases. My main concern is her carrying the pregnancy herself. I agree that a surrogate could’ve made better sense.

That’s ridiculous. You will be cheating your child out of a childhood, I don’t care how much money you throw at them. You will be 60 when your child is 10. I mean, come on! At least adopt, and give a child a good home.

Who knew science worked miracles. First talks of cloning the extinct wolly mammoths and now a senior citizen is pregnant. Wonders never cease in the scientific community.

I worked with a woman who gave birth to twins at the age of 50. She was very open about the fact she had to use doner eggs but her husband…10 years her senior with adult childen…was the father. Personally , I could not fathom why she wanted to experience being pregnant. She felt the even at her advanced age, she could deal with young kids. I thought about those childen…a mom in her late sixties and a father in his late 70’s..as they graduated from high school.

Shouldn’t that ship have sailed already?

For heaven’s sake people, why can’t you keep it positive and wish them all the best. Pretty sure that working with the doctor and fertility specialist has helped them prepare for having a baby at age 50. Just because you wouldn’t do it, doesn’t mean it’s not right for them.

A little different not like she has to work a 9 to 5 get up in the middle of the night will have nannies and personal nurse. I have adopted as well as gave birth it is wonderful how ever you have a child.

I wish her well, and a healthy baby.

Why is she selfish? If she can have a healthy child at 50, why shouldn’t she? Not everyone meets the person they want to have children with at 20 like some of you oh so lucky people. Amazing how negative people are. This child will have a great life

My fertility doctor told me years ago that she regularly had patients coming in saying, “But this celebrity got pregnant at 45-50 years old. Why can’t I?” It’s because, these celebrities, she explained, use donor eggs. No one talks about it the manner that they once didn’t talk about adoption. I had my daughter at 43 and this renowned specialist said I was ‘very, very lucky.’ One year later my FSH levels more than doubled. Stories like this give women the sense they have all the time in the world which, as my doctor said, is a real disservice.

Tosha on

Will this child have downs?

guest on

Must be a donor egg It would be a miracle to have eggs that are still good at her age.

Hey 't' on

Hey ‘t’…the only thing funny here is the fact that you’re laughing at someone else, yet you can’t even write a complete sentence and you (sadly) don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re”. How about concentrating on your own mistakes instead of ripping into others for what you think they’re doing wrong? (did you sleep your way thru 2nd grade? Seriously…you don’t know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’. That’s just pathetic)

Congrats, but the risk of birth defects once the mother reaches 38 starts to rise dramatically. A 50-year-old has a significant chance of having a child with birth defects, so keep your fingers crossed.

I’m nearly 38 and pregnant with my first child and I’m exhausted and on all sorts of medication and finding it stressful. Janet could very well be much healthier than a lot of us and is obviously is good care at the hands of her physicians. What she chooses to do is her own business. While we are all entitled to our opinions, at the end of the day, if the shoe was on the other foot and it was one of us who made the decision to try for a baby at that age, how horrible would it feel, to have a bunch of negative people weighing on on the subject. Every day in a mother to be’s life (especially a first time mom) is nerve racking, you won’t truly relax until the baby arrives. So why do so many women enjoy mud slinging, instead of just saying “better you than me but wishing you all the very best”

Congratulations!!! A baby at any age is such a blessing. It makes me so sad to see women criticizing her age. Every woman walks her own path, let us not throw stones. A mature mother can offer so much, please stop the judgement.

ImALadyToo on

I don’t care how much $$ she has – I don’t think it is fair to the child. If the child goes to college, mom will be 72 when he or she gets out.

Congrats, Ms. Jackson. May the Lord bless you with a happy, healthy pregnancy and delivery.

Ever since Prince died I’ve wondered if he would have been happier if he had had children (or if his son with Mayte had lived). I think we just don’t have a frame of reference for what it is like to experience such fame. When you can have anything in the world, the things that almost anyone can have (family, children) might seem less important. Sometimes people find out too late that it was what they really wanted. I’m glad for Janet if it isn’t too late for her to have the child/children she wants, I wish it could have been the same way for Prince.

Her first GRANDchild, according to blinds.

Anything is possible I guess but I find it hard to believe, I’ve lived a long time and I know no one who became pregnant at 50 years old.

Ha, you can tell the persn who wrote this article was born in the 90’s. Lolol Janet already has a son with her ex husband/ manager. She has always been terrific about hiding her personal life… Some of these starletts nowadays can take a lesson in privacy. congrats to Janet!

Congratulations to Janet. It is great news. But a lot of women having babies at this age, don’t seem to think beyond the adorable baby stage. I wonder if they think much about, that will have teenager, in their mid sixties. Not an easy age to deal with all the challenges, of raising a teen.

why must it be a donor egg. these celebs freeze their eggs and I heard Jennifer Aniston did as well on her 40th birthday

I’ve read comments on other websites that this isn’t her first baby, she had one about thirty years ago. The thing is, I can’t find any information on this supposed child.

Best wishes to Janet and she will need them when she is 60 and her child will have already traversed enough ‘phases’ to make her feel like she is 80. I hope she raises a wonderful, talented child, one could easily argue she is genetically predisposed to produce talent.

Tim Goodwins on

This story makes it sould like they just discovered this. Did you not believe her weeks back when she stated she was canceling her tour because she was pregnent. The press is a little out of step.

Kat on

I am the product of older than average parents- Mom was 2 months shy of 38 and Dad was 3 weeks short of turning 50. I don’t care who you are or how much money you have, it is tough on a child whose parents are old enough to be your grandparents. It wasn’t so bad in elementary school but once I hit middle and high school, I didn’t have the same active parents that my classmates, including one of my nieces, had.
Janet is being selfish and is certainly not thinking of what lies ahead for this child- whether she is actually carrying it or not- this child will wonder why his/her parents are so much older and they will worry that Mom and/or Dad won’t live long enough to see them graduate, marry and have children.
Yes, babies are a blessing but becoming a first time Mom at 50 is nuts!

Lisa on

As some other people have said, this will be Janet’s grandchild. She had a baby girl when she was a teen, and she was secretly raised by a family member. Now *she* is pregnant, and Janet is going to raise the baby as her own (and is pretending that she is pregnant at 50). The Jackson’s are so weird.

Marie on

Her first child would have been 30 years old, by now.

sally on

Isn’t it funny how someone ALWAYS has to give us the details of how old she’ll be when the child graduates, etc…! Like we can’t figure it out ourselves!

st on

Funny how so many women get pissy when they find out a women is able to have a baby at an older age! Comments like- the baby will probably have a birth defect or she will be exhausted and unable to care for the baby. Not to mention having to give all the details about how old she will be when the child is in school and how awful that will be for the poor child! Lots of stupid comments being posted here!

Don Silvester on

Will it make her hooters bigger.?

Mark Downs on

Very happy for her. Congrats.

Peter Slawinski on

Congratulations to Ms. Jackson.

Donna on

Here’s why I believe she did not choose a surrogate to carry the baby. At 49 she has no viable eggs of her own left, so she got pregnant with a donor egg and probably her husband’s sperm. She needs to carry the baby herself in order to make it seem as if she is the biological mother. You know those Jacksons, they are notoriously secretive, dishonest and misleading in the information they share.

Anonymous on

My bet would be she froze her eggs when she was in her 30s…maybe even 20s. I get the feeling she has wanted to be a mom for a long time and it was just never the right time (as if there is a right time). So I doubt the baby will have the birth defects associated with getting pregnant older than 35.
However, just because Janet stays in shape and has plastic surgeons keeping her face looking young doesn’t mean her organs are young. I hope that she has a healthy pregnancy, all the money in the world can’t prevent organ failure when organs are pushed passed their capacity. I just don’t understand why they didn’t go with a surrogate. There is no shame in it, especially at her age. If she wants to be there for her child for a long time the best idea would have been having someone else carry the baby rather than putting her body through the stress of pregnancy at 50 years old.

Vanna on

Congratulations to the happy family!

Trina on

Don’t know why BUT my BS meter is going off. Sure they have the money to produce a baby…medical technology is amazing! I agree with the previous post…I bet a picture of her actually pregnant will NEVER surface. Yes, it’s selfish to have a child this old…poor kid will be teased about his/her old mom and stuck being a caregiver most of it’s life.

KL on

Wow 50 yrs old…. lots of risk but if its true, good for her!!! Hope the baby is healthy

OL on

She looks good and younger than her age 50.

JustMe on

“Starting a family” at age 50?!!? Isn’t that a recipe for potential heartbreak as far as producing a healthy baby? I guess she has enough money to ensure that won’t happen, via modern medicine, procedures, etc., though. Didn’t read the article yet, but regardless, I don’t feel this is a great idea. 🚼

Baby at 46 on

Having babies nowadays there are so many tests to look for problems with the unborn. I imagine with her age, donor eggs or her own, they went through tests to make sure they were syndrome free. Good luck to her. My son is a healthy advanced 18 month old and I had no complications with him during the pregnancy or birth. And my own eggs. The doctors will monitor her like crazy. I am sure. I bet she has enough worries with out hearing all the negativity she knows people will pass.

Anonymous on

Well thts a shock to me

Ritt on

If you’re wealthy, you can do nearly anything. She’s most likely using frozen eggs or a donor’s, so she doesn’t have to “deal with” a special needs child. I say, do what you please if you can afford all the nannies and help you’ll need.

I’m currently in the IVF process myself. What Doctors don’t tell women is that the typical decline in egg quality rapidly declines around age 38-39. Everyone’s situation is different. Some of the “Grandparent comments” are cracking me up. I think 50 is crazy early to be a grandparent, but I’m not judging. Congratulations Miss Janet!

You know what is funny how everyone is getting on Janet about being pregnant at 50 but celebrating and the girls on ’16 and Pregnant’ and making them stars. What a backwards world we live in?!? How jacked up is our society and so jaded for someone that had a great career regardless of obstacles out of her control, to take some time out to plan a family with her husband?!?
