Dania Ramirez Welcomes Twins Gaia Jissel and John Aether John Shearer/Invision for A&E Networks/AP

This maid is now a mama!

Dania Ramirez and her husband, director John Beverly Amos Land, welcomed fraternal twins on Tuesday, Dec. 17, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.

Daughter Gaia Jissel Ramirez Land weighed in at 4 lbs., 12 oz. and measured 17 inches long, while son John Aether Ramirez Land weighed in at 4 lbs., 9 oz. and measured 18 inches long, the Devious Maids star’s rep tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Dania’s so in love with them,” the rep adds.

After marrying Land last February, Ramirez, 34, announced her pregnancy in July. The actress celebrated her baby shower in September, revealing the sexes during the party. Although she had already chosen their names, Ramirez decided to keep them private until she met the babies.

“We have these really beautiful and powerful names for them,” the former Heroes star told PEOPLE at the time. “I want to say them out loud once I see them for the first time, just to make sure that it all feels right.”

Now that Ramirez is sure her choices fit, she explains them to PEOPLE.

“Gaia is the Greek goddess of Earth. Aether is the god or personification of the upper air that only the gods can breathe, hence the medical term ‘ether,'” she tells PEOPLE, adding that they call their son by his middle name.

“They were actually siblings in Greek mythology. My 12-year-old stepson’s name is Kai, which means ocean, and we wanted to connect them all. So now we have water, earth and air.”

As for the twins’ other names, they each honor family.

“John is after my husband,” Ramirez explains. “Jissel (pronounced Giselle) is my middle name and I was called that while I lived in the Dominican Republic. When I moved here, everyone called me by my first name because of roll call at school, so I stuck with Dania.”

The second season of Devious Maids will premiere April 20 on Lifetime.

Congrats. But really, People, did you need to tell us that twins that are a boy and a girl are fraternal? Did you think someone might think they were identicl?

I love her on Devious Maids.

Congratulations. Babies are a blessing.

Nice names.

AKMGR – yes, yes they did. I have boy/girl twins and I often get asked if they are identical.

Oh…THOSE twins.

kristin on

They are very beautiful names. Does anyone know how the little girl’s name is pronounced. It looks so pretty but I cannot figure out how it is said.

Jana on

Beautiful names. The little girl’s first name is pronounced Guy-a. In Greek mythology Gaia was Mother Earth.

Ashley on

@ Kristin: Gaia is pronounced “guy-ah.” The name is of Roman origin. It was a term of respect used to refer to members of the nobility, or which servants would call their employers. The men were called Gaius, and the women, Gaia.

Anyhow, very nice names and I’m glad both babies are healthy.

AKMGR: “Fraternal” twins can also be girl/girl, or boy/boy, because English doesn’t use “sororal twins” to indicate non-identical female twins, and non-identical boy twins are, in fact, “fraternal.” (Soror means sister; frater is brother.)

Congratulations and nice names!! 🙂

Can someone remind me the last time a celebrity named their son John?! Props to her for giving her boy a solid, classic name. Gaia is beautiful also.

Boy/girl twins can indeed be identical. Google Turner’s Syndrome.

Congratulations!!! Beautiful names for your twins.

@Kristin GUY-UH

Thank you all for the pronunciation and info. That is just a beautiful name. Too bad I have named all my kids already.

so happy for her ! their names are beautiful. congratulations !

@Blessedwithboys: Mmm… not accurate. If they are monozygotic, they are of one sex, that is, both will be girls if Turner’s is the problem. Turner’s just indicates that one twin’s X-chromosome is “gone,” not that she is a boy.

@ JenDC thank you!!!! Turners syndrome girls are girls!!!!!!!!! We are females!!!!!! We are not boys or missing genitals. Turners syndrome means some of our DNA is damaged which is the cause of most turners syndrome females having delayed puberty and being infertile. I look like any other female. You would never know by looking at me that I have Turners Syndrome besides the short stature that I took growth hormones for. I have a high iq, went to college, have a job, a car, etc. educate yourselves people!!!!!!

@Jen DC, twins that are boy and girl can never be identical, so it is redundant to have to say anything else no matter what the proper terms are. And since we are going for proper terms, in the medical field there are monoamniotic/monochoronic, monoamniotic/dichorionic and diamniotic/dichorionic twins, the di/di twins can be monozygotic or dizygotic.

@Anonymous, LOL, people can be so ignorant it amazes me that the human race has survived. Just out of curiosity, how do you reply to that when you are asked if they are identical?

AKMGR- It’s rare, but it IS actually possible for boy/girl twins to be identical…and blessedwithboys is right about the connection with turner’s syndrome. Here’s an interesting article about it: http://babyandbump.momtastic.com/twins-triplets-multiples/114004-identical-twins-can-opposite-genders.html

With that out of the way, congrats to the family!

Congratulations on the honeymoon babies! Beautiful names! Now with 3 of the 4 elements, dare we assume there will be a “fire” in the near future?

Dee on

I’m so happy that they did this with connecting a bond between all the children. That is pretty awesome. It’s hard sometimes as a blended family especially with a new baby, what a way to celebrate the first born. They now truly have a bond that can never be broken.

Congratulations to the family, I cannot wait for Devious Maids to start up again, it’s my guilty pleasure 🙂

Jen DC on

AKMGR: This is at least the second story about them, an update – so the whole thing is redundant. The information is provided for both audiences: Those who know the twins are fraternal, and those new to the story. Yeah, I know all about the whole one sac, two sac, one egg, two egg situation.

AKMGR on

@Anonymous-thank you for the article, I also called a geneticist I know and she said the split is so early and so rare that the incident is negligible. She said in her 30 years she has never seen it or known anyone that has, but again thank you for educating me.

@Jen DC, I’m not sure why you told me this was a follow-up story. My original comment was that if they are a boy and a girl we don’t need to be told they are fraternal. I didn’t read the original story and it did not add anything to this story.
