Dania Ramirez Pregnant Expecting Twins
Jason LaVeris/Filmmagic

When Dania Ramirez went to her doctor three weeks ago, she got some “incredible” news — the Devious Maids star was expecting twins!

“I had the first appointment and the woman who’s doing the sonogram looks and says, ‘Oh, I love to start my morning with great news!'” Ramirez, 33, tells PEOPLE. “My husband [John Beverly Amos Land] was like, ‘Okay, we already know she’s pregnant…’ and she goes, ‘Oh no — it’s going to be two!'”

“My husband was like, ‘What?’ And then she goes, ‘Hold on, let me look for a third,’ and my husband says, ‘Get that out of her right now!'” the actress recalls with a laugh.

Ramirez says she never expected to have twins — even though they do run in her family.

“My grandmother has twins and triplets, but it’s still shocking and it’s still surprising,” she says. “My older sister has two kids — and she didn’t get twins — so it wasn’t like ‘How could this happen?’ but at the same time, I was thinking one.”

The news is especially funny because Ramirez says that, even as a child, she was enamored with the idea of having twins.

“When I was younger I was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if I could just bang them out at one time?'” jokes Ramirez. “I’d never have to worry about it … wouldn’t it be great to only get fat one time?”

Speaking of weight gain, that’s exactly what Ramirez thought was happening when she first discovered her slight belly bulge a few months ago.

“I felt this little bump,” recalls Ramirez. “And I said, ‘Oh my God, let me do some crunches, I’m eating too much.’ That’s how I found out!”

She’s due this winter, although Ramirez doesn’t want to reveal how far along she is — at least at this time

“I’m keeping that to myself right now,” she says. “They’re still little … you saw the sonogram — you can barely see what’s going on!”

Ramirez doesn’t know the sex of the babies yet, but says she doesn’t have a preference either way.

“My husband has an 11-year-old son [Kai]. We got together when he was 8, so I’ve taken on that step-mom role and I started getting the baby bug. At this point I just want them to be healthy and that’s my main concern,” Ramirez explains.

“I come from a family full of women, so having boys would be great. I’m one of three and my mom is one of 10 girls!”

My girlfriend just had twin girls and they are the sweetest, tiniest babies ever. Ava and Audrey so precious. Why not get it over with with one shot. Hope all goes well. God bless

“get it over with” is the ugliest thing one can say about their children.

Guest on

That was not said about children, it was said about pregnancy, and trust me, as much as I love my kids I did not love being pregnant. I can totally see where she’s coming from.

Did she have fertility treatments?

Just Me on

Why is it that random black “celebrities” end up having twins? I bet they’ll be boys and one of them will be Jax/Jackson

Steph13 on

Really, I can not believe u just posted tht!!! They are NOT black. Mom is Hispanic n dad is White!!!

Pamela on

Did u really just post that “Just Me”? Could u be any tackier?

Anonymous on

Congrats on the great news but EARTH TO HOLLYWOOD: There is no shame in having to use medical help to conceive your family but please stop trying to pretend you are ‘surprised’ you’re having twins when YOU were the one who decided how many fertilized eggs you wanted to implant into your uterus.

Pamela on

In case u don’t know, “Anonymous,” it is possible 2become pregnant w/multiples w/out receiving fertility treatment. U really should shut ur big, fat mouth.

Natalie on

@ anonymous Have you ever been pregnant or cared for children?

You love your kids more than you can express, but there are plenty of moments you just want to get it over with.

Pregnancy isn’t easy for a lot of people and if they only what 2 kids I’d think they’d be happy with with only going through pregnancy once.

I hoped for twins the first time. My mom had twins , my sister had twins and DH and I wanted 2 kids. Pretty much everyone women in my family has tough pregnancies I was only hoping to do it once. Instead I had my daughter then 18 months later my son.

She kills me the way she says, “Mr Spence,” on Devious Maids.

That is pretty much how I found out I was expecting twins- I went in for my first ultrasound at 14 weeks. The ultrasound tech said “Oh is this your first ultrasound?” and I said it was, then she says “Well I am so excited to be the one to tell you it’s two babies!” We laughed, cried and were in disbelief.

Found out it was identical boys about a month later. They were born super early at 33 weeks 4 days but only spent 8 days in the NICU. Clayton was 4 lbs 2 oz and Cole was 4 lbs 1 oz. Now they are ten months and have been my world. They are actually very good babies. I was super scared before they arrived but that quickly faded. You could never tell they were preemies!

Congrats to her!

@Just Me… She isn’t black. She’s Dominican.

She is so beautiful and I love her on Devious Maids! Congrats mama…..such an exciting time for you and your hubby!

WOW!!!!!! ASSUMPTIONS!!!!!! All these people claiming she is having twins due to fertility treatments. Nowhere did the article mention fertility treatments. The article did say multiples run in her family. Even if it is from fertility treatments, it is none of your business. Some people cannot get pregnant on their own. JUST BE HAPPY FOR THE COUPLE!!!!!

@Just Me, you win for stupidest comment on this post.

@Just Me: You are an idiot. She is hispanic not black. She isn’t a random celebrity. She has been in the business for a while but only recently garnered a little fame because of the show Devious Maids.

I hate it when people say they don’t care if it is a boy or girl, they just want them to be healthy. Well guess what! You don’t get to choose any of that. Boy, Girl, healthy, unhealthy, the children still need to be loved and cared for without expectations of being healthy or not!

TJ on

@Just Me-Actually she’s not black, she’s Hispanic. Also, black women are more likely to concieve twins.

Melissa on

I can so understand how she felt! I was so surprised to find out I was having twins at my first ultrasound. I cried my eyes out scared to death at the thought of raising 2 babies by myself! I had a boy and girl. They are now 4 years old and life is perfect! and I have people tell me all the time that I am lucky I got my boy and girl all at one time! LOL

BVargas on

To Just Me…J. Dania Ramírez is a Dominican-American TV and film actress so have your facts correct before you post ridiculous comments.

Andrea on

Same scenario with me!! During my sonogram she said “there’s baby number one…. and there’s baby number two. Let me make sure this over here isn’t a third”… I almost passed out, so I can relate to what she was feeling for sure 🙂 My girls are identical mirror image twins and now 4 years old and wild as ever! Lol

Tammy on

For her to say, “I’d never have to worry about it … wouldn’t it be great to only get fat one time?” in my opinion is RUDE….pregnant women are not FAT they are pregnant

Jen on

If they know the sex then she is at least 9 weeks along. Sex organs do not form until the end of the 8th week of pregnancy and based on the picture she posted and the development of the arms & legs, I would say she is about 10-12 weeks along

Mandy on

Lighten up people! To Cindy-most parent’s will love their baby no matter if it is healthy or not, but who is really going to wish for a baby with health problems? Also most pregnant women feel fat even if they aren’t. Hormones make you wacked out. Just say congrats to this lady & move on or did no one teach you not to say anything if you don’t have anything nice to say?

Diana on

She says flat out twins run in her family. Why assume fertility?

Anonymous on

She’s a black Hispanic. Case closed…geeze you think all Hispanics have to be white?!

khidjah on

Actually she is black. And Hispanic. FYI, Hispanic is an ethnicity. You can be white and Hispanic or black and Hispanic. As far as I have seen, she identifies as black.

Wowsers on

If I’m not mistaken, she identifies as black. Most of my Dominican friends identify as black as well- they share an island with Haiti for centuries for gosh sake!!!

Hispanic is an ethnicity, NOT a race. A quick trip to Latin America will reveal THOUSANDS of Hispanics are black. Hispanic, for the most part just means the country of origin is related to Spain (through colonization..) although I think Brazilians are also called Hispanic. I also remember learning that certain races (blacks included) are more likely to have twins naturally… shrugs. Hate to see misinformation…..

Congrats! I just had boy/girl twins 2 months ago…not a planned pregnancy and twins do not run in my family! They’re such a blessing though!
