Poppy Montgomery‘s pregnancy has come up roses — and it’s a girl!

The Unforgettable star and her boyfriend, Microsoft executive Shawn Sanford, welcomed their first child together on Monday, April 22, her rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Daughter Violet Grace Devereux Sanford arrived at 7:57 a.m., weighing in at 6 lbs., 12 oz. and measuring 19.5 inches long. She joins big brother Jackson, 5, Montgomery’s son from a previous relationship.

“We are overjoyed with the arrival of our beautiful angel and filled with gratitude that she is happy, healthy and thriving,” the couple tell PEOPLE.

After announcing she was expecting a baby girl with Sanford, whom she began dating in late 2011, the PEOPLE blogger realized curbing her cravings wasn’t so easy.

“Little pieces of sushi talked to me in my sleep. Oysters lined up and did the samba,” she shared.

Confident that the key to her happiness was everything in moderation, Montgomery made good on her words of wisdom, glowing while posing for pictures at her March baby shower.

Shopgirl on

So cute, she’s carrying on the flower tradition. Her sisters are Lily, Daisy, Marigold and Rosie.

Jodie on

I remembered reading this somewhere and found it first on Wikipedia:

She is one of six children and her parents named her and her sisters (Rosie Thorn, Daisy Yellow, Lily Belle, and Marigold Sun) after flowers, and their brother after Jethro Tull.

Do people ever get married before having children anymore? It doesn’t appear to be a Hollywood activity. Poppy has two kids, two daddies, no marriage. I don’t have any big moral soapbox, but I wonder about the message all the people, both in and out of Hollywood, are giving their children when they can’t feel secure..whose next our next mommy/daddy? Kids need security, to feel safe, that they can count on the adults, that they aren’t just passing through, that a parent cares enough about them to try and prevent worry and stress…..

beautiful name. So beautiful!

Stormy- So that’s where the “Devereux” part of Violet’s and Jackson’s names come from (his full name is Jackson Phillip Devereux. I looked it up, as I couldn’t remember if he had a middle name or names and was curious!)! I wonder if it’s her mom’s maiden name or something?

Anyway, congrats to them, and I love the baby’s name!

Jillian on

I think she is the most beautiful celebrity out there. Just….drop dead gorgeous!!! I’m jealous

Congratulations Poppy!

I hope your new arrival inspires more terrific blog posts, I so look forward to them! And I’m sure you naming her in family tradition made everyone feel extra special.

MollyF on

@Cynthia, why don’t you go back to the 1950s in your Ozzie and Harriet ways where the woman stayed home and the man went to work. *rolls eyes*

You can have a loving family without being married. The kids won’t feel insecure if their parents aren’t married. There are kids who don’t feel secure if their perents are married because they are fighting all the time.

I’m happy for Poppy. Violet is a wonderful name. 🙂

Grace on

I’m always surprised when people think children suffer no stigma having unmarried parents. Children get teased about that issue a lot from other kids. It’s interesting how people always minimize the effect of unwed parents on children.

BARBARA on

I agree with Cynthia. I am realistic about today’s morals and children can have a happy, healthy life, depending on loving parents. But some things are or should be sacred and marriage doesn’t seem to be one of them any more.

Julianna on

I love the name! It’s so classy and elegant. Congratulations, Shawn, Poppy and Jackson!

Also, I laughed as I imagined oysters doing the samba. Cannot stop laughing at that.

meghan on

So morals make you old fashioned? Good to know Molly.

Molly ~ I must agree with Cynthia in regards to being married first before the child comes along. A really solid long-lasting established relationship needs to be made between two people before a child is brought into the picture. I’ve always liked Poppy from her show, but two kids with two different dads. What about the third one – ?? Will it be from another guy?? Who knows – ?? Not even Poppy herself. . . . . . . . . .

SAR on

What a beautiful name. Congrats to the new parents and the new big brother.

lovely123 on

If you say VG really fast it sounds like something else!

meghan- Unfourtnately, marriage before children IS becoming old-fashioned these days! I always say I’m old-fashioned for believing in marriage before children OR sex, because I know I am. More importantly, it’s a label I’m proud to bare! 🙂

sharon on

How sad society has gone down to this level where everyone thinks nothing is wrong about having a child and not being married. Such low morals and values now – its very sad.

Hazel on

Congratulations…now you have two children from two different fathers…way to go!!

Elaine on

My mother used to say, “If you live in a glass house, don’t throw rocks.”

Since some people are throwing rocks, I am going to assume all the “marriage before children” people are perfect in every way.

Angela on

I think she has a type. This boyfreind looks just like her actor ex-boyfriend.

Marky on

MollyF, my 18 yo grandson would tell you otherwise. He was made miserable many times between Kindergarten and 11th grade. I’ve seen him just hold his head in his hands and cry from the things said to him because his parents never married. We do not live in an area where I would have expected that, and his mother had graduated from college and was well on her way to owning her own company. I would never say it doesn’t matter after watching a great kid go through so much misery. Little ones don’t care, but as the children get older, it matters big-time; it matters even more if mom is dating different men, and the child is having to deal with that as well. It isn’t a matter of “living in the ’50s”; it is reality in the 21st century, too.

Elaine, seriously?? Recognizing that parents not being married and jumping from partner to partner is not good for children hardly means that person believes themselves to be “perfect in every way”! Quite a leap!

Bella on

What about her having another baby with a different man makes her any less deserving of respect? I think you all need to get off of your preachy high horses. You don’t know her or why her relationship didn’t work out, so don’t judge. You really don’t have the right to have an opinion on her life or the decisions she makes. I’m sure her children are very happy. Either way, not my place to say or guilt her out about it…

Amy on

Congratulations Shawn, Poppy & Jackson on the birth of baby Violet!! Lovely name…

Grace on

I think Poppy having a child so quickly with another man COULD have an impact on her son. Think about having to explain to a young, impressionable 5 year old the complexity of having a second baby with a man who is not the 5 year old’s father. No personal knowledge of her or her children, but I would assume her son is happy. Still, that must be a lot for a child to deal with. But the long term impact of her having a baby so quickly with a second guy, obviously must impact Jackson. And yes, Poppy deserves respect. But so do I, so please don’t write rude remarks. I’m just expressing an opinion about how a 5 year old could be affected.
