It’s a boy for Robert Downey Jr.!

Wife Susan delivered son Exton Elias Downey at 7:24 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Los Angeles, his rep confirms to PEOPLE.

“Everyone is healthy and they couldn’t be happier,” a friend of the couple says.

Baby boy weighs in at 7 lbs., 5 oz., is 20 inches long and joins big brother Indio, 18, Downey’s son from his previous marriage.

After announcing the pregnancy in August, the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows star, 46, revealed the sex of the baby on national television, much to his producer wife’s (feigned) chagrin.

“I could never really stay mad at him, but I can tell you it genuinely wasn’t something we planned to reveal,” Susan, 38, later explained.

Thankfully, her husband — who will next star in The Avengers — did manage to keep quiet about their name choice.

“If I told you the name, then she would lop off my head with a machete,” joked Downey.

Robert Downey Jr. is amazing man and incredible father…

I’m so happy.

Welcome to the life Exton Elias Downey!

Abbie on

I think Exton works, especially when you already have a son named Indio. Different, just like Robert is himself. Congrats to the family!

Betsy on

Exton and Indio? My dogs have better names than that.

Michael D on

Congrats to the Happy Couple. Cute name.

mandii on

LOOOOOOOOVE the name! Congrats!!

Natalie on

Congratulations to Robert and Susan!

I like the name a lot. It’s different, but not completely out there. I also think it’s neat that they chose Elias as the middle name too.

kim on

love the name and congrats–kinda was hoping he would have a girl–but healthy and happy is all that matters..

Sun on

Congratulations on the new addition to the family! I remember well the troubles that RDJr went through the 90s; I’m happy that he’s found peace, success, and personal happiness.

Sandy on

Man people are SO ready to jump on the name a celebrity chooses for their baby. Get over it and stop picking apart the names they choose. How in the world do you know the meaning behind the name? Could be a great-grandfather’s name etc..

It’s their choice and people should not say whether they like it or not.

lo on

Congrats to the both of them! they will make great parents!!!!!! πŸ™‚

Kim Wattman on

Congrats!! As my dear grandmother used to say people don’t name their babies to please you and to each their own, atleast the baby’s name is an original and I have heard worse names in Hollywood.

Elizabeth on

Robert Downey Jr’s father’s surname was Elias. He changed it to his stepfather’s name Downey per IMDB. RDJ gave a nod to his dad at the Golden Globes this year as well. I love the custom of sharing family names for the new generations like a prized family heirloom.

Amanda on

Congrats to the Downey clan! RDJ and Susan always seem so so very happy, and very much in love when seen together. I am happy that he has found peace, love, healthy, and has turned things around for himself. Personally, I love the name, I love the different-ness of it, and I love saluting his family’s history. :o)

Meg on

So great odd but not stupid name congrats family!!! Cant wait for Avengers!!!

Lisa on

LOVE the name! Congrats to the Downey Jr. family!

I was hoping for a Robert Downey III

Congrats to them! I think it is a cute name.

Side note: I laugh out loud when someone calls something stupid yet they are stupid as they get the name wrong…who is the stupid one in that case??

Kelly on

Welcome on this planet Exton Elias Downey! Congrats to Susan and Robert! I’m so happy for them!!!

Cyn on

Exton – I quite like that. It’s unusal, but not weird.

Holly on

Indio is cool, Exton sounds like a company.

Kassie on

How great to see that Robert Downey’s life has taken such a positive turn and now, again, he is a proud father. So happy for this family. Many blessings their way!

gottabelieve on

I’m so happy he turned his life around – I never thought he would do it, and now he has another son to enjoy! Congrats!!

Sara on

Exton is an old English name.

Jeana on

Yeah the kids in school will call him Exxon

Paige on

Congratulations to Robert and Susan! I love this couple! She saved his life and career and I’m so glad he’s turned his life around.

Different name but not completely ridiculous like some other baby names in Hollywood. I would love to know if there is a special meaning behind the name.

Beatrice LaBoomba on

Congratulation! I am an admirer of Robert Downey and his wife Susan.

I was somewhat dismayed when, earlier in her pregnancy, Robert was quoted as saying something about wanting a girl because he didn’t want Indio feeling like he was being replaced. I thought “For sure he’ll have another son and how will that son feel when he’s older and reads that quote.” I feel certain that Indio is mature enough to take it in stride. Robert however, needs to learn to temper what he says in public.

lori on

I grew up in Exton, PA. It is supposedly an old English name, Interesting to see it as a baby name!

K.W. on

Exton is a little town outside of West Chester, Pa lol…all it’s known for, well…nothing.

Melani on

I can see them calling the new boy Ex-El. Lot of expectation from a nickname like that.

Dawn on

Why not Exton and Indio? Does any one really think in the circle these kids are going to travel that names like Bobby and Cindy would be less weird? Best wishes to all of them!!!

Diane on

I am so happy for RD, and his wife. Since they have been married he has looked so happy and it shows through in his work. Congratulations to a talented family.

JM on

i actually quite like the name. probably wouldn’t name my kid but there are some names that people here seem to consider normal that i think just sound horrible (logan, brooke, freya, cash etc.). to each their own.

congrats to the family, wishing them health and happiness.

Franci on

Congratulations to this lovely couple on the birth of their son. I went with my grown 25 year old to see Robert’s movie, Sherlock Holmes II. We LOVED it. Make some more, please.

Ashley on

LOL at Betsy, I agree!!!! How ridiculous can you get?? I know cats and dogs with better names πŸ™‚

Jennifer Zemlin on

I grew up on Exton Road, not a fan of the name for a baby, best left for a street name. Congrats though, I love RD jr.

bostonhcky1 on

Congrats Robert and Susan! ❀

NORMAN on

I am a close Family Friend, and I happen to know they named their son after the geographically named location where he was conceived. Exton, Pennsylvania.
Just saying…

amsjll on

Everyone who thinks Exton is weird, or that ANY Hollywood child will be made fun of for their name needs to keep in mind they are not going to some local suburban elementary school.

In addition, all names are new to children. My older one started kindergarten this year. To her, the name Exton would be no more odd sounding than Andrew or Michael.

Amanda K on

Congrats to them on the arrival of their son! I like the name too πŸ™‚

K. on

I love Robert & Susan Downey–they are BOTH so talented. Happy he reinvented his life with her, and they now have a son! Great news!

Sarah S. on

Welcome to the world, Exton Elias! Congrats to Robert, Susan and big bro Indio!! πŸ™‚

Dave on

I am surprised she didn’t “lop of his head” for naming the boy Exton, it sounds like an oil company.

J on

Oh Betsy, I’m sure robert has heard worse from better people.

m on

The name sound like an oil company. Maybe exxon is paying them for the advertisement?

Breck5 on

So many judgmental comments about the name…nasty, catty chicks on here. I’m sure all of your pets, children, parents and friends have gorgeous names according to you…who cares???!!!!

Kasee on

I think Exton is kind of cool sounding, and at least if the kid grows up to hate his name he can go by his middle name. Elias is a perfectly “normal” name, including Eli. Unlike some other celebrity babies where if you don’t like your first name of Pilot, the other choice is the middle name of Inspektor…

seila on

i really love the name exton, but not sure if it goes well with downey. still, congrats!

Shannon on

Indio dodged a bullet. lol

Gigi on

What is wrong with Exton Elias? Sounds quite sophisticated and tasteful to me. It’s a perfectly acceptable name…not some made-up name. What’s wrong in America that when someone doesn’t name their child the most currently popular name they call it strange and odd. It’s very European, even British-sounding and it is, in fact, Shakespearean. Robert Downey Jr. is one of America’s finest actors who has mastered his craft and giving his son a Shakespearean name is not odd at all. Americans have so little taste. Pitiful really.

Ellie on

Where the heck do these folks get their baby names? Exton huh? And everyone gave Beyonce hell for Blue Ivy huh? Exton, wow….whoever came up with that name needs a good lashing for sure.

ruby on

Indio, California
Exton, Pennsylvania

Obviously these two places mean something to RDJ. It is not a made-up name. It is a legitimate, albeit very uncommon name for a boy. Good grief.

Mary on

I like the name.

Here’s what Exton means

Origin: Shakespearean

Meaning: ‘King Richard The Second’ Sir Pierce of Exton.

Soul Urge: People with the name Exton have a deep inner desire to inspire others in a higher cause, and to share their own strongly held views on spiritual matters.

Expression: People with the name Exton value community and balance, and are dependable and considerate. They often tend to gravitate to occupations where they can act as peacemakers or negotiators, or fulfill these roles among their friends and family. They tend to be conventional, responsible, family-oriented, warm and affectionate. They sometimes worry obsessively about those they care for. They work for harmony and balance in their lives, and respond positively to beautiful things.

Tina on

Sounds like the name of a prep school back east.

Romy on

dislike the name a lot! sure the baby boy will be cute and loved though!

Sherie on

My son was born last year and his name is also EXTON! What a great name!

Nat on

LOVE the name!! I think its very cute. Best Wishes!! And Congrats!!!

Ellie on

@Ruby
Your explanation sounds very logical to me. If the boys are named after those places, it is possible that they were conceived at those locations. Ron Howard named Bryce Dallas Howard and her sisters in that fashion, too.

Brittany on

Exton and Indio are both cities.

Julie J on

CONGRATULATIONS Robert and Susan on little baby Exton Elias (love the name…Very Cool!) Glad that all went well, and mom and baby are happy and healthy! Robert must be on cloud-9! Best of luck to the Downeys on their new little bundle of joy! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

To ALL the haters of the babies name… STOP CRITISIZING!!! THE BABY ISN’T YOURS TO NAME… HOLY COW, SO MANY TERRIBLE PEOPLE OUT THERE
😦 WHAT A SAD WORLD WE LIVE IN, AND THATS PRETTY MUCH DO TO ALL YOU HORRIBLE PEOPLE. Have you not heard the saying, if you don’t have nothing nice to say, THEN KEEP YOUR MOUTHS SHUT! WOW..

Sophia on

Gotta say, I like Indio and Elias a hell of a lot more than Exton, but hey, it’s not my baby!

Congratulations to Robert, Susan and big brother Indio, and welcome earthside little Exton Downey!

Rita on

Congratulations to Robert and Susan

Congrats to them!

Elias was Walt Disney’s middle name….not so shabby…sounds rather nice and not so common.

Rita on

Russian fans congratulating Robert and Susan

Daisy on

I’m happy for Robert Downey Jr btu I’m also wondering why, if a 46-year old woman has a child (think Kelly Preston) she’s crucified; but everyone is cheering for a 46-year old man (with a history of drug abuse at that). I think it’s sad that in this day and age so many people have a double standard against women.

Jane on

ELIAS is Robert Downey Jrs. REAL LAST NAME, that is why he gave it to the baby as a middle name, because it will probably be used as his legal last name as Robert uses it, as Elias IS his real last name, Downey is just a stage name his dad started using and so Robert uses it.

Wendy on

Congrats!!!! to the big brother and mom and dad !!!! So glad you’re happy and healthy!

Madeline on

I actually love both of his son’s names. But I especially love the name Elias, one of my top five names for a baby boy.

Anonymous on

Exton is a family name on Susan’s side

history on

Exton actually means King Richard in England and an actual name used for boys. Since when did some of you earn the right to call other childrens’ names stupid?

Capri on

Congratulations to Robert and Susan!

M on

Robert Downey Jr. is his real legal name not a stage name. It was his dad who was born Elias but changed it to Downey after his step dad to join the army.

Karen on

I think Exton is a perfectly acceptable name for Hollywood’s standards. It’s unique but not insane sounding. It sound’s like an old British name. It is a heck of a lot better than Apple, Kyd or Moon Unit for example.

Congrats to Robert and his lovely wife!!

PS on

Yaaaay! So happy for them!

KatieLynne on

Jen, How do you know Exton isn’t a family name for the Downeys? Even if it isn’t, what’s wrong with some creativity?

You should read some of the censuses for the early 20th century U.S.; you know, our families all emigrated to this piece of land at some point. And all of those people brought unusual names, both given and surnames. I’ll bet you’d be surprised at some of the names that are lurking in your ancestry. ;o)

Besides, why breed animosity for your soul? It isn’t healthy!

Jazz on

Congratulations on the healthy new arrival!!

KD on

I like Exton. It’s an old English name and I personally think some of those should make a comeback, along with some of the Celtic/Welsh/Irish names. There is a definite sophistication to the name which matches his father.

Congrats!

Tara on

I actually don’t find the name that strange and really find it to be better than some in hollywood have chosen *cough Pilot Inspektor cough*.

Anyhoo, best wishes to them both on the addition of a healthy baby boy!

Susan Albert on

Why is it such a surprise hat they gave their son such a weird name? What are these stars thinking about?

Sarah E. on

Seriously, why should you even judge them for giving their new born baby boy an odd name. I don’t see how it is your business to judge the couple.

The main point is that the baby was born healthy, and Susan was also well after giving birth. Stop being so judgemental and just be happy for them. Is that really so hard?

MollyF on

As someone here wrote Exton ‘King Richard The Second’ Sir Pierce of Exton. It’s a Shakespearean era name. I think it’s very unique and nice.

Congrats to Robert Downey, Jr and his wife. πŸ™‚

Shiv on

I’m sorry but I can’t get on bored with these celebrities who name their children, well, not names at all. Exton isn’t the name of a person, it’s the name of a city. And I bet he’ll have a ‘cool’ nickname like Ex or Exie. I like RDJ but like his movie Due Date, the name sucks.

Sharon on

Couldn’t be happier for RDJ and his wife! I have been a big fan of his for a long time and I am thrilled to death that he got his life AND career back on track! What a blessing to now have a new baby boy! Tons of CONGRATS to the Downey’s!

Joshua Exton Harding on

Great name our son is seven and is also named Exton. To those un educated morons who call it just another stupid celebrity name! you couldnt be more wrong there is a lot of family history to the name. Tell me is there any family history behind names like Chuck, Brad, David, Sparky, Chip, Nute or Mitt??????? Common

Ang on

Susan gave birth to a gas company-congrats!

Catca on

@Call Me Scranton,

I find it rather amusing that you can’t get on “bored” with what a celebrity names his or her child. Personally, I can’t get on “board” with you having the gall to judge another when you don’t even know the difference between “board” and “bored”.

There is an old saying (just like the traditional name of Exton is old) that goes “those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”. Just because you haven’t heard of a name doesn’t mean it is not traditional or that it is weird. It just means you haven’t yet been exposed to it.

JMO on

I guess it wouldn’t be a bad name if it didn’t remind me of Exton, PA.

Lucy on

Exton is the name of a very beautiful village in the heart of Rutland in rural England. Elias is RDJ’s real last name.

Weird name. So when his girlfriends or wives break up with him, he will be their “Ex” in more ways than one. Again, weird name. But so is Indio.

Belinda on

I don’t get the people on here who thinks they somehow have a right to judge on how RDJ and Susan wants to name their kid. No one is telling you how to name your kids, so just stop talking.

Exton is a perfectly great name, he’s healthy and happy and the family is great so that’s what really matters.

Reina Magedman on

Congrats Robert & Susan!! So happy for you both!!

What is the problem with all those stupid people complaining about Robert’s choices of names for his children???? Robert has the right to choose names that he likes and if these people hates those names, then it’s their problem, not Robert’s. This is so ridiculous.

Congratulations for the new baby Robert.

I bet y’all would think any non-Westernized name sounds weird too. RME.
